Reforest Patagonia is the largest native-species reforestation canada pharmacy campaign in Chile’s history. It aims to recover part of the more than 3 million hectares of native forest that has been devastated over the last neem online century as a result of fires and human intervention. This initiative is the first step in a long-term project that aims to aid the recovery of national parks and reserves in Chilean Patagonia.
Anyone! This campaign requires support from everyone who hopes to preserve the integrity and identity of Chilean Patagonia, one of the world’s most ecologically important places. We invite everyone—private citizens, companies, and nonprofits, regardless of country—to join this historic campaign.
You can plant your own tree in three easy steps by visiting www.reforestemos.cl. First, go to the “Plant a tree” section. Choose a grey tree and click on it. The platform will connect to Facebook and your details will be linked to the tree. You may also include a message. If you don’t use Facebook, you may enter your details manually. Second, choose the number of trees you would like to plant. Each tree costs US$7. You can then pay using PayPal or Webpay. Finally, your purchase will be published on your Facebook Timeline and you will receive a Certificate of Reforestation via email with the exact coordinates of where your tree will be planted, along with a geo-tagged link to Google Maps showing the location.
CONAF, Chile’s national forestry service, certifies that each tree has been properly planted. Once you purchase a tree, you will receive a digital Certificate of Reforestation that includes the exact coordinates where your tree will be planted, along with a geotagged link that lets Google Maps show you the location. At ReforestPatagonia.com, you can learn about how we raise, prepare, and plant trees in Patagonia.
Reforestation involves the labor of dozens of workers, special gels to maintain the humidity of the roots during transportation, and screens to protect each tree during its first year of life. In order to reach the remote areas we’ll be reforesting, we have to use helicopters, trucks, and even packhorses. $4 will cover all costs of planting, transportation, and operations related to reforestation.
We have identified four areas in Chile for reforestation: Torres del Paine National Park, Laguna San Rafael National Park, Lago Carlotta National Reserve, Cerro Castillo National Reserve.
Because Patagonia’s flora varies considerably, we will plant three types of trees: Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), Coigüe (Nothofagus betuloides), and Ñirre (Nothofagus antarctica).
Nothofagus trees are native to Patagonian ecosystems. If Patagonia had never experienced human intervention, these species would have naturally been the most abundant in this part of the world.
The trees that will be planted in Aysen comes from Mañihuales greenhouse, located in the same region. The trees that will be planted in Torres del Paine National Park comes from the Conaf’s greenhouse, Dorothea, located in Puerto Natales.
We conduct studies in the area in preparation for reforestation, working together with CONAF and forestry experts to determine the areas for reforestation and the species to be used.
With its extensive experience in native-species reforestation, Patagonia Sur will oversee the planting of all trees. Workers will be divided into planting teams comprised of a forestry
engineer, technician, three line markers, nine planters, and trained volunteers from Chile’s National Youth Institute, INJUV. CONAF, Chile’s national forestry service, has specified where trees can and cannot be planted. CONAF will also oversee quality control, ensuring that planting operations do not harm the local environment, and verifying that each species we plant is native to the area where it is being planted. Trees will be planted in a pseudo-random pattern to best replicate natural forest.
Chile’s National Forestry Service (CONAF), through its National Parks & Forest Reserves Administration, is charged with protecting and caring for the trees once they are planted.
Areas for reforestation are determined in conjunction with CONAF. We also work with CONAF to identify the type of protection that the saplings require, in accordance with their location and any natural threats they may face. As a result, two planting methods have been adopted: cluster planting, which consists of protecting plants with chicken-wire fences in order to keep hares out, as well as the use of shelters to protect individual saplings from guanacos (large llama-like animals). The Reforest Patagonia campaign also finances the construction of other forms of protection against herbivores and carries out research in conjunction with Universidad de Chile to monitor and evaluate the number of saplings that take root with statistically valid sampling.
Reforestemos Patagonia is a non-profit foundation which is audited by an external entity – in this case Deloitte – to ensure that individuals or companies do not profit from its activities. Donations have NO other purpose other than the one stated. In addition, the spirit of not profiting from this campaign is enshrined in the agreements signed by the Fundación Imagen de Chile (Image of Chile Foundation) and the Office of Tourism, both of whom are partners of this initiative.
For a project to produce carbon offsets there are several requirements such as baseline studies, sequestration studies, accreditation and additionality, among others. As Resforest Patagonia is financed by other means other than the sale of these offsets, is not considered as emission reduction project of greenhouse gases.
